Prep Preview: Garden Grove at Jurupa Hills

I’m covering the Garden Grove-Fontana Jurupa Hills boys CIF-Southern Section Division 5 Semifinal Round playoff soccer game today, March 1, 2016.

The best part of this assignment is each division has reached its final four this CIF-SS postseason.

THE LOW DOWN:
Garden Grove (13-7-3 overall) were a perfect 7-0-0 in February to get to this point. The Argonauts have the coolest moniker but still finished behind cross-town rival Garden Grove Santiago in the Garden Grove League, but have reached the same level of success to this point as Santiago, which plays Santa Monica Crossroads in the other D5 semifinal. Should both win it would mean, yes, an all Garden Grove final. Coach Ralphy Stevens’ No. 1 priority must be seeing his charges through to the program’s first section final in more than 10 seasons, then maybe he’ll post a roster online.

jurupahillsLOGOFontana Jurupa Hills (16-6-2 overall) was not expected to get here. The No. 3 team from the San Andreas League — behind San Bernardino Indian Hills and San Gorgonio — backed into the playoffs after a 3-2 loss to Arroyo Valley to end the regular season. The Spartans have bounced back with three consecutive victories to reach their first section semifinal. Program found/head coach Armando Fresquez has put together a surprising run in his sixth season at the helm, the innovator behind a team scoring plenty of goals (nine this postseason) while allowing just two goals so far.

STARTING XIs (Probable):
Garden Grove — Not available

Jurupa Hills — Not available

THE DIFFERENCE:
What can Jurupa Hills do at home to derail Garden Grove’s current run of form? Jurupa Hills has had some good players and some good teams in its young history, but this is Coach Fresquez’s biggest challenge to date.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Garden Grove 2, Fontana Jurupa Hills 1
