Prep Preview: Ramona at Kaiser
I’m covering the Riverside Ramona-Fontana Kaiser CIF-Southern Section Division 4 2nd Round playoff game today, Tuesday, May 24, 2016, for the Southern California Newspaper Group/(@SoCalNewsGroup).
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Fontana (Calif.) Kaiser High School.
THE LOW DOWN:
Ramona (22-10 overall, 13-2 River Valley) has won eight consecutive games, but now faces a huge litmus test against one of Division 4’s top-seeded teams. Coach Clint Ball’s team ended the regular season with a momentum-building extra-innings victory, and topped it off with a 14-7 win over Apple Valley Granite Hills in the first round of the playoffs. Senior Daniel Martinez (.356 BA, 12 2Bs) had an RBI double to lead the Rams’ 13-hit barrage vs. Granite Hills, and senior Rigo Cano (.340 BA, 29 RBIs) continues to tear the cover off the ball.
Kaiser (24-3 overall, 14-1 Sunkist) jumped into the Inland Area Top 10 last week and stayed there with a slim 6-5 victory over La Habra Sonora in the first round. Although all nine starters come into today’s game batting .310 or better, Coach Michael Spinuzzi’s team will need similar gumption if its to overcome an arguably more talented team. Junior Oscar Rocha (.412, 26 RBIs) leads the team in PAs (104) and runs (24). Senior Justin Wells (.371 BA) tops all Cats with 11 doubles and 13 extra-base hits.
THE KEY PLAYERS:
Ramona — 3B Rigo Cano, Sr. (#16); 1B/C Paije Dabbs, Sr. (#21); 2B/SS Nick DeLaRosa, Sr. (#11); OF Donovan Gifford, Sr. (#13); INF/P Daniel Martinez, Sr. (#5); P Raul Rodriguez, Sr. (#18)
Kaiser — UT Juan Barriga, Sr. (#21); 3B Jacob Gonzalez, Sr. (#27); 2B Jason Lopez, Jr. (#36); SS Oscar Rocha, Jr. (#10); OF Justin Wells, Sr. (#42)
Ramona’s talent level. If it shines through, the this should be a manageable game for the Rams.
THE FINAL SCORE:
Riverside Ramona 8, Fontana Kaiser 5
