Prep Preview: Yucaipa at Dos Pueblos

Our (still) new correspondent, Harvey Cohen (@coleslawharvey) is covering the Yucaipa-Goleta Dos Pueblos CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Quarterfinal Round playoff game today, Friday May 27, 2016 for the Yucaipa News-Mirror/(newsmirror.com).

First pitch set for 3:15 p.m. at Goleta (Calif.) Dos Pueblos High School.

THE LOW DOWN:
Dos Pueblos (22-8 overall, Channel champions) defeated Arcadia in the first round, 13-2, then traveled to defeat Villa Park, 2-1, in the second round. First-year coach George Hedricks’s team has regular season wins over Oxnard, Pasadena Maranatha, and Westlake Village Oaks Christian. Formula to defeat them: score early off probable starter Darby Naughton, 7-0, 1.45 ERA and shut down pro prospect Justin Demeter, 6 HR’s, 26 RBI, 35 hits, .376. Naughton has gone a total of 11 innings to win both playoff games. Has four innings left against Yucaipa. Unheralded Jonathan Sloan and Colton Nisbet have been on a tear at the plate in the playoffs. No. 2 starter Kevin Barker, 4-3, 2.81. Closer Austin Bull sounds good but, 3.41 ERA in 15 games.

yucaipaLOGOYucaipa (21-9 overall, Citrus Belt No. 3) hascan set up a CBL semifinal vs. Redlands East Valley with a win today coupled with a REV win at La Mirada. Coach Jeff Stout’s team has pulled playoff upsets over Simi Valley and Rio Mesa and is no longer a desired opponent. Tight defense and deep pitching throughout. Zero errors in both games. Tristen Macias won both games in relief. Had game winning RBI v. Simi and scored winner v. Rio. Josh Torrance and Jacob Barnes (.411) on fire with multiple key hits in both games. Sinker baller Cody Stevens will get start with 2-time All-CBL Tyler Van Marter perhaps first man in relief. Freshman Joseph Lomeli already considered one of best shortstops in school history. Devin Perez has been above .355 all season.

KEY PLAYERS:
Dos Pueblos
— Darby Naughton (Jr. 5-11, 155); Justin Demeter (Sr. 6-1, 180); Peter Appel (Sr. 6-0, 180); Josh Fieldhaus (Jr. 5-10, 175); Gio Macias (Sr. 5-8, 155).

Yucaipa — Tristen Macias (Sr. 6-2, 175); Jacob Barnes (Sr. 6-1, 180); Cody Stevens, (Jr. 6-0, 200); Tyler Van Marter (Sr. 6-2, 175).

THE DIFFERENCE:
The 170-mile trip to Goleta cannot benefit Yucaipa and poor base running won’t help. Pitching and defense goes to Yucaipa. Dos Pueblos is forced to eventually throw someone besides the herky-jerky motion of Darby Naughton, who has experienced recent arm problems. Will come down to bullpens. Could be slug fest. Containing DP’s Demeter a problem.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Yucaipa 8, Goleta Dos Pueblos 6
