GAME OF THE WEEK: Rialto vs. La Sierra

THE DETAILS:
Rialto vs. Riverside La Sierra
CIF-Southern Section – Week 1
Nonleague
At Riverside (Calif.) Norte Vista HS
Kickoff: 7 p.m. PT on Thursday, Aug. 23

RIALTO (0-1 overall, 0-0 San Andreas) got out to a bumpy start with a 39-13 loss in Week 0 Perris Orange Vista, allowing 18 points in the first quarter and getting shut out in the second half. The Knights got an early 9-yard rushing TD from senior SB Malik Reed and went deep to score on an 88-yard passing play for their second touchdown, but the offense will need to be more consistent to make a difference in the weeks ahead. Still looking for senior RB Jamal Moorefield to make an impact for this team.
HEAD COACH: Robert Mitchell
ROSTER – QB: Steven Cota, Jr. (5-foot-6, 160 pounds); RB: Jamal Moorefield, Sr. (5-7, 220); WR: Luis Naranjo, Sr. (6-foot, 162); Raymond Yglesias, Sr. (5-3, 140); OL: Paul Verdin, Sr. (6-2, 240); DL: Robert Perez, Sr. (5-10, 220); LB: Isaiah Mitchell, Sr. (5-8, 195); CB: Zach Garcia, Sr. (5-9, 160); K: Minor Estrada, Soph. (5-6, 145)

RIVERSIDE LA SIERRA (1-0 overall, 0-0 River Valley) is off to a fresh start after topping San Bernardino 27-16 in its Week 0 opener, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind and win. Senior QB Bryce Poppe had three passing TDs and rushed for a fourth in the win for the Eagles, who now carry some momentum into their home opener. Senior WR Andre Thomas had two TD receptions among his six catches for 95 yards, and junior RB Julius Hicks looks like the real-deal after a 18-carry, 135-yard performance.
HEAD COACH: Garry Hedlund
ROSTER – QB: Bryce Poppe, Sr. (6-foot-1, 160 pounds); RB: Julius Hicks, Jr. (5-11, 200); WR: Andre Thomas, Sr. (5-8, 165); Jamario Torres, Sr. (6-foot, 185); OL Joey Alvarez, Sr. (5-10, 225); DL: Andrew Taina, Sr. (6-1, 230); LB: Lamar Gaines, Sr. (5-10, 160); DB: Edward Morales, Sr. (5-11, 160); K: Tyler Wheelwright, Sr. (6-1, 185)

THE DIFFERENCE:
La Sierra’s offensive weapons. If Bryce Poppe can continue to limit mistakes and get balance in the attack from RB Julius Hicks, this could be a strong indication of the Eagles’ abilities this season.

THE FINAL SCORE (PROJECTED):
La Sierra 42, Rialto 26
