GAME OF THE WEEK: Orange Vista at Garey

THE DETAILS:
Orange Vista vs. Garey
CIF-Southern Section – Week 13
Division 13 Playoffs – Semifinals
At Pomona (Calif.) Garey HS
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday, Nov. 16

ORANGE VISTA (11-1 overall, 5-0 Inland Valley League) surpassed all expectations for 2018 and are now playing with house money. The Inland Valley League champions smoked everyone on their schedule – except El Monte (a 20-14 loss in Week 4) – and are riding high after back-to-back shutout victories to start the CIF-Southern Section Division 13 playoffs. The Coyotes topped Menifee Santa Rosa Academy 42-0 in the first round and turned around and beat up on Anaheim Loara 43-0 in a Week 12 quarterfinal round matchup. Senior tailback Kayvionta Patterson is a transfer from MoVal Rancho Verde, and an absolute terror to opponents every time he carries the football with 17 touchdowns and more than 1,100 yards this season.
HEAD COACH: Greg Zomalt
ROSTER – QB: Noel Ramirez, Sr. (5-foot-11, 160 pounds); RB: Thaj Stevens-Nguyen, Soph. (5-6, 165); RB: Jose Ochoa, Jr. (5-9, 175); WR: Pablo Trejo, Sr. (6-4, 210); OL: Juan Solis, Jr. (6-1, 250); DE: Isaias Dyer, Jr. (6-1, 225); LB: Raul Hernandez, Sr. (5-9, 165); DB: Omar Gutierrez, Sr. (6-foot, 158); K: Diego Alas, Sr. (5-9, 150)

GAREY (10-2 overall, 3-1 Miramonte League) has been riding an emotional roller coaster after backing into the CIF-SS playoffs following a dreadful 38-7 loss to cross-town rival Pomona in Week 10, and then barely escaped the first round of the Division 13 playoffs with a 49-48 win over Torrance Bishop Montgomery. The Vikings won a little more comfortably in Week 12 with a 41-32 quarterfinal round victory over Playa del Rey St. Bernard, but this team relies on its ability to pound that ball and now must face what is likely the team defense in the D13 bracket this season. Sophomore RB Thaj Stevens-Nguyen is a game-breaker with 12 rushing TDs and more than 1,200 yards on the season.
HEAD COACH: Dave Fleming
ROSTER – QB: Aaron Ramos, Jr. (5-foot-10, 160 pounds); RB: Kayvionta Patterson, Sr. (5-5, 165); RB: Elijah Banks, Jr., (5-10, 190); WR: Andrew Roots, Sr. (5-9, 165); WR: Ahasuerus Woods, Sr. (5-9, 174); OL: Dion Wilson, Jr. (6-5, 240); DE: Da’Von Patterson, Jr. (6-foot, 210); LB: Ke’Shaun Mackey, Jr., (6-foot, 185); DB: Keshaun Reynolds, Sr. (5-9, 155); K: Josemiguel Lopez, Sr. (5-10, 150)

THE DIFFERENCE:
Orange Vista’s defense is of championship caliber, especially for Division 13.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Orange Vista 27, Garey 20
