HILLCREST (1-4 overall, 0-0 River Valley League) lost three nailbiters to begin the season then got a big win over lowly Lakeside only to lose again, this time 44-31 in a shootout with Tahquitz in its nonleague final. Junior RB Albert Vences has improved every week, running for 138 yards and touchdown despite the loss, but the Trojans defense isn’t getting stops when the need them. Conversely, Hillcrest is allowing an average of more than three touchdowns per game.

NORTE VISTA (4-1 overall, 0-0 River Valley League) lost in Week 0 at Capistrano Valley but hasn’t dropped one since, allowing just 10 points per game across its four wins. Sophomore RB Dreaddie Allain has rushed for 100-plus yards in every game this season, including a season-high 146 and two TDs last week in a 33-20 win on the road at Muir. He is the younger brother of former Braves RB Eddie Allain, who rushed for more than 2,100 yards in 2021 and finished with more than 6,400 yards for his prep career.
