Take a closer look at Perris Citrus Hill senior Jonathan Jefferson and you’ll see a player embracing the weight of a team’s expectations upon him.

JEFFERSON

Jefferson, the team’s quarterback and running back, begins every offensive play in the backfield calling plays from version of the Wildcat formation. And usually, he sets off to run.

He totaled more than 1,100 on the ground last year as the team went 7-4, failing to make a dent in the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound team captain can sling it a little bit, too, completing 5-of-6 pass attempts in Week 1, but it was his ability to run with the football that the team so desperately needs. Jefferson gained 80 yards and scored twice in Week 0, and followed it up with 137 yards and four touchdowns in Week 1.

We caught up to Jefferson after Perris Citrus Hill’s convincing 28-10 non-league victory over Corona Santiago on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017.

InlandFieldhouse.com: This is the start of your second year with this offense. How’s this for Week 1?

Jonathan Jefferson: “Working with this offense has been great. I go to practice every day, Monday-through-Friday, working as hard as we can. We’re trying to perfect the plays as best we can. Coach is always telling us, ‘Watch film, watch film,’ and we’ll perfect the plays.”

IF: Tonight was a way different result than last year’s 48-10 loss to Santiago. What was different this year?

Jefferson: “They came hard the first half but we just had to answer back with a touchdown and just keep on going with the offense. Last year and this season there’s a big difference because we lost a couple guys, they lost a couple guys but I was a dude that had to step up as quarterback and take over the offense.”

IF: You had 37 carries tonight and touched the ball on every down. How are you going to preserve yourself for a long season?

Jefferson: “Just got to hydrate throughout practice. Coach’s biggest thing was effort, effort all day at practice, come to practice and know the plays, try to perfect the plays.”

IF: Are you more comfortable this season?

Jefferson: “I feel way comfortable with carrying the offense. It feels really good.”

IF: What are the goals for this team?

Jefferson: My goals for this year are to get a ring. We’re going to CIF to go get a ring.
