Prep Preview: Tem. Canyon at Norte Vista

I’m covering the Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon-Riverside Norte Vista varsity football game at Alvord District Stadium tonight for the Press-Enterprise. The best part of this assignment is sure to be observing the battle between Temescal Canyon’s senior-heavy defensive line and Norte Vista’s re-tooled offense, led by senior RB Ryan Ruiz.

THE LOWDOWN:
Both look, again, like third-place teams in their respective leagues. Temescal Canyon (3-2 Sunbelt, 6-5 overall in 2010) has experience at offensive skill positions and on the offensive and defensive lines but will lean on its running game. Norte Vista (3-2 Sunkist, 5-6 overall in ’10) will try to balance its own running game with an improved passing attack that’ll feature a lanky QB and a couple of talented receivers.

KEY PLAYERS:
Temescal Canyon
— QB: Mason Mill, Sr. (6-foot-2, 200 pounds). RB: Michaal Shephard, Sr. (5-9, 210). WR: Eric Zepeda, Sr. (6-1, 170). OL: Guillano McDonald, Sr. (6-2, 240); Dylan Rodriguez, Sr. (6-2, 250). DL: Hala tevita, Sr. (6-2, 235); Trent Texeira, Sr. (6-foot, 210); Grant Gooselaw, Jr. (6-3, 220).

Norte Vista — QB: Daniel Duronslet, Sr. (6-foot-4, 185 pounds). RBs: Ryan Ruiz, Sr. (5-11, 220); Gabriel Pena, Sr. (5-10, 215). WRs: Victor Hernandez, Sr. (5-9, 170); Peter Verdusco, Sr. (6-3, 210). DL: Sal Cena, Jr. (6-foot, 215). LB: Jarodd Cunanan, Sr. (5-11, 205); Ulysses Leon, Sr. (5-9, 200).

THE DIFFERENCE:
A home game on opening night is never a factor to take lightly. Norte Vista’s seniors will be feeling prepared and confident and the Braves, generally, will be more up for this game. The crowd at Alvord Unified School District Stadium should be pro-Norte Vista and loud, and the Braves’ senior lineman will be influenced the most. Expect those linemen to open up some decent holes for Ruiz, who will run for more than 150 yards and at least two TDs in a close, one-score victory.
NORTE VISTA 27, TEMESCAL CANYON 21
