CLOSER LOOK: Riverside Poly’s Eric Cross

Take a closer look at Riverside Poly’s Eric Cross and you’ll see a young man who has already picked his life path.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior is going to be a golf professional.

First stop: Cal State Fullerton. The Titans offered and Cross agreed.

Next stop: Go pro. He’ll have four or five years to get his game ready, and do it while playing in one of the best collegiate golf conferences in the country.

And then: Live the life. Get hired as the on-site professional at any one the United States’ plethora of fine golf establishments.

And wouldn’t you know it? He’s sort of has an ace in the hole.

His father is Jeff Cross, the PGA professional at the Victoria Club in Riverside (Ca.).

Now, now… before we go all berzerk on how great it must be to grow up on a golf course… Eric certainly earned his scholarship on his own merit. It merely helped that he could hit unlimited range balls along the way.

Right now, Eric, 17, is one of the best in the CIF-Southern Section’s Eastern Division. He recently led his team to a second-place finish at Monday’s team finals at Jurupa Hills GC in Jurupa Valley (Ca.).

I caught up with Cross following the Big VIII Individual Finals, where he was seventh overall after shooting a two-round total of 155 (76-79).

Unfortunately, I deleted the quotes before I was able to transcribe them here.

Cross plays at CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division Finals, to be held May 14, 2012 at Mission Lakes CC in Desert Hot Springs (Ca.).

It will be one of the last tournaments of his prep career. And yet just one in a lifetime of tournaments to come.
