FOUR & MORE: Best CIF-SS Title Games

PREP BASEBALL 2012

1. Corona vs. Alhambra, Division 1 — The never-say-die Panthers (19-4) have gone from a 5th-place finish in the Big VIII League, an at-large playoff bid and a Wild Card Round victory all the way to the marquee game, 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Wow. Just wow. Senior OF Zac Cavazos (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) is the team’s leadoff hitter and offensive catalyst.

2. Woodcrest Christian vs. Lancaster Paraclete, Division 5 — Title contenders is a role that the Royals (24-3) have become accustomed to in recent seasons, and even though they’ve sustained some sizable losses they’re back for more (1 p.m. Sunday at UC Riverside). Credit goes to Coach Glenn Prater for his knack for turning out studs every season. This year it’s senior P/C John Davis (5-foot-8, 175 pounds), an Inland Area Player Of The Year Candidate.

3. La Verne Bonita vs. Alhambra, Division 3 — The first CIF-SS title game on the docket (1:30 p.m. PDT at Dodger Stadium), this game could be the culmination of a season-long quest for the Bearcats (29-2), the No. 1 seed in Division 3. Cal State Fullerton-bound Justin Garza (5-foot-11, 165 pounds) has had a magical postseason, and will likely get the start (1:30 p.m. Friday at Dodger Stadium).

4. Palm Desert vs. Temple City, Division 6 — The Aztecs (25-8) may go overlooked everywhere but in the Palm Springs area, but this team is riding a 12-game winning streak coming into the finals (10 a.m. Saturday at UC Riverside). Senior P Brooks Kriske (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) is 9-3 with 91 Ks in 77.2 IP this season.

AND MORE: Mission Viejo Aliso Niguel vs. Garden Grove Pacifica, Division 3 — The “unofficial” 2012 Orange County title game (4:30 p.m. Friday at Dodger Stadium) should feature plenty of intrigue, and the winner will have bragging rights — in a place where bragging rights are king — for the rest of the calender year.
