CLOSER LOOK: REV QB Armando Herrera

Take a closer look at Redlands East Valley freshman Armando Herrera and you’ll see a player with the world in front of him.
The 14-year-old just completed his second game as starting quarterback of REV’s varsity football team and did so impressively, passing for 338 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats opened Citrus Belt League play with a 55-21 victory over San Bernardino Cajon on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013.
So what’s next for this kid?
I mean, 338 yards for a 14-year-old is sort of crazy, right?
“We’ve got some good receivers and a pretty good 14-year-old, man,” REV coach Kurt Bruich said.
Herrera was quick to thank his receivers when I caught up with him after the game.
What do you think you did well tonight?
“I think I executed well. I trusted my receivers. I trusted my line to find the blocks. I just executed,” Herrera said.
Coach Bruich tells me you’re 14. I don’t believe him.
“I am 14, yeah.”
What’s it like to be a freshman QB on a senior-led team?
“It feels good. It feels really good because you know you can trust the seniors, and the juniors and the sophomores to want to get the win,” Herrera said.
What are your goals for this season?
“We got to win the CBL. That’s big,” he said.
Winning the Citrus Belt League would be big. It would ensure the Wildcats a crack at an 11th game (and probably a 12th).
And it might not quite be the world for this (very) young quarterback, but it’d be a start.
Armando went to school with my daughter at St. Catherine’s, right across the parking lot from Notre Dame. From what I hear, he’s a great kid. Best of luck to him.
