Prep Preview: Roosevelt at Santiago

I’m covering the Eastvale Roosevelt-Corona Santiago varsity football game tonight, Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, for The Press-Enterprise, pe.com & @PEcom_preps.

The best part of this assignment is watching whether or not Santiago can secure a playoff berth with a victory at home in Week 10.

RooseveltTHE LOW DOWN:
The Mustangs (2-7 overall, 1-4 Big VIII) have had a rough time this season but defeated Riverside King to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Senior QB Andrew LaBruna has been solid (2,000-plus passing yards & 20 passing TDs) but has turned the ball over (seven INTs) as the team suffered through a four-game losing streak to start the season and a three-game losing streak to open league. Senior WR Sean Bowden has been LaBruna’s favorite target, totaling 37 receptions for 629 yards and six TDs.

SantiagoLOGOThe Sharks (4-5 overall, 2-2 Big VIII) got blown out of the water last week by Norco, 63-7, and are desperate for a win tonight to extend their season. Head coach Scott Morrison firmly said, “There are no moral victories,” after his team lost, 79-31, to Corona Centennial in Week 8 then followed it up with an even worse performance. Senior QB Jacob Hennie was benched during the loss to Centennial then barely played last week. Will backup QB Alex Sandoval start again tonight? Sandoval threw three INTs vs. Norco’s ferocious secondary, and has totaled four INTs in his last two appearances.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Roosevelt — QB Andrew LaBruna (Sr., 6-foot-2, 205 pounds); RB Christopher Newman (Jr., 5-9, 170); RB Alonzo Tate (Sr., 5-11, 205); WR/SS Sean Bowden (Sr., 6-3, 183); WR/DB Cameron Smith (Sr., 6-foot, 174); WR/CB Donald Hayes (Sr., 6-foot, 175); WR/CB Chase Williams (Soph., 6-1, 175); DE/DT David Potts (Sr., 6-3, 242); DE/OLB Richard Cage (Jr., 6-3, 225); MLB Michael McDonald (Soph., 6-1, 205); SS/FS Chris Wilcox (Sr., 6-2, 175); K Dante Heredia (Sr., 6-1, 175).

Santiago — QB Jacob Hennie (Sr., 5-foot-11, 183 pounds); RB Mason Hale (Sr., 5-10, 165); RB Kamari Carter (Sr., 5-9, 170); WR Jacob Ricard (Sr., 5-9, 170); WR Andreau Benny (Sr., 6-1, 175); SB John North (Jr., 5-9, 150); OLB Terrell Sayles (Sr., 6-1, 215); MLB Tyler Desario (Sr., 5-11, 195); OLB Alex Benter (Soph., 6-2, 200); FS/DB Tyler Williams (Sr., 5-10, 165); FS/CB Nate Acosta (Sr., 5-11, 160); WR/SS Justin Romo (Jr., 6-foot, 165); K/P Jake Roberts (Sr., 6-2, 180).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Confidence will be in short supply on both sides, but look for the support of a home crowd to help push Santiago into the playoffs with a victory. Their ‘Shark Tank’ will be the 12th fish.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Corona Santiago 38, Eastvale Roosevelt 35
