Prep Preview: Mission Viejo at Vista Murrieta

I working the Mission Viejo-Vista Murrieta CIF-Southern Section West Valley Division Championship Game tonight, Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, for @Inland_Sports.

The best part of this assignment is that it’lll be my first West Valley Division title game, and it’s a rematch of last season’s inaugural game (won by Mission Viejo, 21-10), so it’ll be like I really didn’t miss a thing.

MissionViejoTHE LOW DOWN:
Mission Viejo (13-0 overall) has just about everything going for it right now. The Diablos defeated Chino Hills 56-21 last week, and senior QB Brock Johnson tossing seven TDs in the win. It’s all coach Bob Johnson could ask for from a defending section champion. The team is about to face its biggest test to date, and will need a near flawless performance to defeat Vista Murrieta a second consecutive season.

VistaMurrietaLOGOVista Murrieta (12-1 overall) is where they think they should be, even if the Broncos are decided underdogs in this game. Coach Coley Candaele is making his seventh consecutive appearance in a section title game so the experience and drive are there. Transfer QB Karson Greeley has managed the offense, and senior RB Kyle Williams and junior RB Cole Dubots has been equal parts explosive and dependable. Defensively, senior Caleb Johnson and Ryan Hudkins have supported a tenacious defense that’s totaled 86 TFLs so far.

Mission Viejo
— QB Brock Johnson (Sr., 6-foot-2, 190 pounds); RB/CB Jordan Loya (Sr, 5-11, 185); RB Isaiah Miller (Sr., 5-7, 170); WR Tommy McWilliams (Sr., 6-2, 175); WR Jason Lee (Sr., 6-2, 185); G/T Zach Aylor (Sr., 6-4, 290); T/C/G Andrew Tomlinson (Sr., 6-2, 240); DT Carter Hartmann (Sr., 6-3, 270) LB Peyton Marshall (Sr., 6-foot, 215): K/P Benn Vallier (Sr., 6-1, 190).

Vista Murrieta — QB Karson Greeley (Jr., 6-foot-5, 206 pounds); RB/WR Kyle Williams (Sr., 6-foot, 180); RB Cole Dubots (Jr., 6-1, 190); WR Khalil Shakir (Soph., 5-11, 171); DL Caleb Johnson (Sr., 6-foot, 215); DL Kevin Atkins (Sr., 6-4, 275); LB Ryan Hudkins (Sr., 6-foot, 210); DB Dwayne Johnson (Sr. 6-1, 185); S Tanner Williams (Sr., 5-8, 170); K Kane Page (Jr., 5-9, 135).

Dwayne Johnson. Literally. If the Broncos star defensive back can make a play or two it may make the different in what will likely be a very tight game.

Mission Viejo 23, Vista Murrieta 17
