Prep Preview: Norco @ King

I’m covering the Norco-Riverside King girls varsity soccer game on tonight, Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, for The Press-Enterprise, pe.com & @PEcom_preps.

The best part of this assignment is the specter of scandal hanging over this game.

NorcoLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Norco (14-6-4 overall, 6-0-1 Big VIII) are not struggling to maintain playoff form in light of the resignation of former coach Clint McDaniel, the ineligibility of two transfers, and the forfeiture of several games due to a CIF-Southern Section official ruling brought about by what Norco coaches claim were the actions of King coach Bryan Kuderman, who purportedly turned over documents that led to an investigation. The Cougars have not allowed a goal since a 1-1 tie vs. Corona Santiago on Jan. 22. It’s the only goal they’ve allowed in seven league games so far, and one of only to they’ve allowed this calendar year. Senior Chandler McDaniel has 33 goals and 21 assists for the Cougars, who have produced 66 goal this season.

kingLOGO3Riverside King (17-4-3 overall, 4-3-0 Big VIII) are pushing for a postseason berth but has lost three of its last six games and is struggling to keep ahead of Eastvale Roosevelt for the third and final automatic playoff spot from the Big VIII. Kuderman got the Wolves out to a fast start in his first season taking over for Geo Napolitano, who amassed a 182-84-22 record in 11 seasons as King’s coach. This season, the Wolves started 14-1-3 but have cooled off in ultra-difficult intra-league play, allowing 13 goals vs. league opponents so far. This team, which had scored a league-high 85 goals, needs a result tonight to stay atop of Roosevelt ahead of their game next week.

THE STARTING XIs:

Riverside King — Unavailable

THE DIFFERENCE:
Norco’s defense has been impenetrable but it’s not perfect. Could the emotion of the night could be too much for an already fiery team?

THE FINAL SCORE:
Norco 2, Riverside King 2
