Prep Preview: Citrus Valley @ REV

I’m covering the Redlands Citrus Valley-Redlands East Valley girls varsity soccer match today, Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, for The Press-Enterprise, pe.com & @PEcom_sports.

The best part of this assignment? It’s an all-Redlands regular-season finale with Citrus Belt League title and CIF-Southern Section Division 2 playoff implications.

presentation_2_v1THE LOW DOWN:
Redlands Citrus Valley (10-6-3 overall, 7-3-3 Citrus Belt) can finish as high as second in league with a victory and a little help. The Blackhawks are unbeaten in their last eight games since losing, 2-1, to REV on Jan. 15, outscoring opponents 25-7 over the stretch. Co-head coaches Norma Mendez and Jack Avakian have continued to have success. maybe not that same level of success started seasons ago by Jacob Geverians in winning a number of Division 6&7 titles, but the Blackhawks are hanging with the CBL’s best and that was the plan all along.

revSOCCERRedlands East Valley (14-6-2 overall, 9-3-1 Citrus Belt) needs a victory to secure a CBL title for the first time under coach Erin Rhodes-Glaser. The Wildcats have won four consecutive games since they dropped their second of the season to Redlands (a 4-1 loss on Jan. 27) but the Terriers (8-3-2) have had struggles of their own, and REV has stayed one step ahead in the league standings. Sophomore forward Karley Weeks had two goals in a 3-1 win over Yucaipa on Monday. The CBL goals leader has scored nine goals in her last four games to lead the Wildcats’ latest charge, while junior goalkeeper Marina Medeiros has allowed just 20 goals in 19 games with five shutouts and more than 110 saves.

THE STARTING XIs:
Citrus Valley
— Unavailable

REV — Unavailable

THE DIFFERENCE:
Karley Weeks is on an absolute tear. If she — or Danika Bowman — can put in a goal or two the Wildcats will secure the CBL title.

THE FINAL SCORE:
REV 2, Citrus Valley 1
