CLOSER LOOK: MoVal Valley View’s Justin Keeling

Take a closer look at Moreno Valley Valley View senior Justin Keeley and you’ll see a player who keeps it close to the ground.

Keeling, a running back, rushed for more than 2,000 yards as Valley View captured the CIF-Southern Section Division 11 championship last season.

Grabbing the majority of the carries by the fourth game of his junior season, the Eagles went mostly as Keeling went, winning every game except those against Rancho Verde (Inland Valley League title game) and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd (CIF-State D7 final).

Keeling went on to finish with 27 rushing TDs and 2,184 rushing yards last season. At Valley View, those numbers get you compared to David Dotson, the school’s first great player and a former USC Trojan.

To wit: Keeling has now rushed for 40 TDs and more than 3,500 yards in 25 varsity games.

If that doesn’t put you among the greats at your high school, your high school is probably in Texas.

We caught up with Keeling after he ran for 270 yards and four TDs in a 47-35 victory over Corona on Friday, August 26, 2017. You just carried the ball 39 times for 270 yards in the season opener. How do you feel?

Justin Keeling: “If feel very great because, I mean, we came in kind of confused but we adjusted to it. Like, they scored the first time against us and after a while we started to just adjust to what we were looking at from their defense. Afterward we got sloppy and let them start scoring but we finished and we grinded.”

IF: How are you guys trying to maintain the momentum gained last season?

Keeling: “That just comes down to our core values. We have four: mental and physical toughness, accountability and responsibility. We use those every day at practice and we come out and we keep that in our hearts and our brains. That’s what stays with us when we’ve got nothing else.”

IF: What are some personal goals for you this season?

Keeling: “Just be a strong player. I’m not the type of person that wants stats. I’m more of a person that wants to help the environment (and) help the team so that the program is greater than when I started.”

IF: How are you guys going to take it to the next level this season?

Keeling: “All I can say is that we just play together and we keep each other up and we motivate each other. We never put ourselves down or take ourselves out.”
