GAME OF THE WEEK: Rancho Verde vs. Santiago

THE DETAILS:
Rancho Verde vs. Santiago
CIF-Southern Section – Week 1
Nonleague
At Corona (Calif.) Santiago High School
Kickoff: 7 p.m. PT on Friday, Aug. 30

RANCHO VERDE (1-0 overall, 0-0 Ivy League) can’t get a regular season game against Corona Centennial so it’ll take one against the team down the street. The Mustangs stand the best shot at usurping Centennial this season as Inland Area No. 1, and will be out to prove themselves against one of the Big VIII League’s best. Sophomore QB A.J. Duffy will be looking to open up the offense and get the ball into the hands of RBs Jordan Jefferson and Elijah Ugorji, and WR Andre McKinney. The defense is again filled with athletes and totally stocked at the linebacker defensive back positions.
HEAD COACH: Pete Duffy
ROSTER – QB: A.J. Duffy, Soph. (6-foot-1, 197 pounds); RB: Jordan Jefferson, Sr. (5-7, 165); RB: Elijah Ugorji, Sr. (6-5, 175); WR: Andre McKinney, Jr. (5-8, 145); WR: Keyunte Brown, Jr. (5-11, 175); OL: Jonah Reeder, Sr. (6-3, 280); DT: Denzel Washington, Soph. (6-2, 305); LB: Kenya Dorsey, Jr. (6-foot, 225); DB: Ronald McFoy, Sr. (6-0, 155); K: Luis Santiago, Sr. (5-9, 165)

SANTIAGO (0-0 overall, 0-0 Big VIII League) has chosen one heck of an opponent for its 2019 season opener. The Sharks are big and beefy on the interior lines, which should be especially good as senior QB Brandon Arambula appears to have entered the season with the edge over sophomore QB Jaidyn Gamble. Senior WR Jackson Kurtz leads a deep, but mostly junior-dominated group of receivers that must mature quickly to help move the chains. Senior SS Ryan Williams is a big hitter in the back and the team’s last line of defense, so he’ll have to limit his big mistakes if the Sharks are able to avoid getting blown out of the water.
HEAD COACH: Scott Morrison
ROSTER – QB: Ryan Arambula, Sr. (6-foot-2, 180 pounds); RB: Carson Foster, Sr. (5-6, 166); WR: Jackson Kurtz, Sr. (6-0, 190); WR: Cade Mahoney, Sr. (6-2, 174); WR: Ashar Granger, Sr. (6-2, 172); OL: Blake Caravello, Sr. (6-4, 295); DT: Keenan Lawal, Sr. (6-3, 324); LB: Mark Moreno, Sr. (6-foot, 230); DB: Ryan Williams, Sr. (6-2, 221); K: Armando Bobadilla, Sr., (5-9, 155)

THE DIFFERENCE:
Rancho Verde’s depth of talent. The Mustangs can throw athlete after athlete at opponents the way Hollywood throws waves of zombies at heroes in horror movies.

THE FINAL SCORE (PROJECTED):
Rancho Verde 35, Santiago 17
