CLOSER LOOK: Summit’s De’Marri Owens

Take a closer look at Fontana Summit sophomore De’Marri “Beanie” Owens and you’ll see a kid having a great time.

Owens has the role of offensive wrecking ball for the SkyHawks (5-2 overall, 0-0 San Andreas League), who defeated Fontana Jurupa Hills on Friday, Oct. 8.

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Owens ran for a game-high 130 yards and one touchdown as Summit tussled with its cross-town rival.

Owens got a 44-yard touchdown on his first touch, breaking a couple of arm tackles escaping the box before outrunning the defense. It’s a quite a sight to see his frame grapple with defenders and the forces of nature.

We caught up with him after Summit’s 14-6 victory over Jurupa Hills. He was in an especially good mood.

InlandFieldhouse.com: How good did it feel to bust that early one for a TD?
De’Marri Owens: “Man, it felt good! To give us the win (and) come out and score against Jurupa Hills, who beat us last year, that made up for it this year.”

IF: Was there a lot of buildup toward a rematch against Jurupa Hills?
DO: “We just practicing so hard the whole week. We’ve just been waiting since last year when they beat us. We didn’t even score last year, but this year we put it on them. That’s all we was worried about.”

IF: Do you think the Summit defense is getting the respect it deserves?
DO: “Man, I love my defense. My defense the best. They all dogs out there. Every single one and especially the D-line. They some dogs.”
