FOUR & MORE: 2012 Prep Predictions

1. Vista Murrieta will repeat as Inland Division champion. It doesn’t seem like too far a stretch to predict that a great team which was undefeated (on the field) last season will win a second consecutive title — the Broncos have their best player back, an experienced defense and the makings of an explosive offense — but do you know anybody that’s actually doing it?

2. Tony Barile will take Eastvale Roosevelt to the playoffs. He’s done it everywhere else he’s coached, dragging San Bernardino San Gorgonio and Riverside La Sierra into the postseason and raising Fontana Summit to a CIF title. Can he do in talent-rich Eastvale what former Coach Bill Stacy couldn’t — beat Norco and Corona Centennial on a regular basis?

3. Fontana Summit will win without Barile. The SkyHawks now have CIF titles in football and basketball and are the go-to program for athletics in Fontana and beyond. Everyone knows FoHi had its day(s), but then A.B. Miller HS was built and it shined for a time under Coach John Tyree, and Kaiser HS opened up and quickly won a couple of titles under Coach Dick Bruich. Well, it’s Summit’s time (still).

4. All the division and league changes will benefit Riverside North the most. The Huskies drop out of the Big VIII League (and the Inland Division) and land in the Inland Valley League (and the Central Division). A football factory as historically productive as any school in the Inland Area, North currently boasts at least one NCAA Division I player (Marcus Baugh) on its roster with the potential for 2-3 more.

AND MORE: Redlands Citrus Valley will be the most well-behaved team in the Inland Area. It better be, after the debacle vs. San Bernardino Aquinas late last season. Actually, it’s surprising Coach Pete Smolin retained his job after what was one of the ugliest recent scenes in local prep sports history.
