Prep Preview: Woodcrest Chr. vs. Norco

I’m covering the Woodcrest Christian-Norco varsity baseball game today, Saturday, March 12, 2016.

The best part of this assignment is its the championship game of the Brian Hamilton Memorial Tournament. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. PT.

Woodcrest Christian (4-0 overall) has run through opponents at this tournament like perhaps never before. The Royals beat Indio, 12-1, and San Bernardino, 13-1, before beating perennial power Chino Hills, 5-0, in the semifinals on Thursday. Coach Glenn Prater has some real weapons this season, including United States youth international outfielder Brenden Boissiere, and pitchers Christian Hammar and Trevor Thompson.

NorcoLOGONorco (5-1 overall) has won five consecutive since losing the first half of a doubleheader in its season opener at Temecula Great Oak. Since then the Cougars have allowed just three runs in those five games — including two shutouts at this tournament — and enter the title game on the heels of a 2-0 victory over Fontana Kaiser on Thursday. Head coach Gary Parcell will lean on his senior-heavy outfield.

Woodcrest Christian
— SP Adam Zellers (Sr., 6-foot-3); C Kurtsten DeLao (Sr., 5-9); 1B Christian Hammar (Sr., 6-foot); 2B Evan Castillo (Soph., 5-10); 3B David Garman (Sr., 6-1); 3B Jordan Keller (Fr., 6-3); OFs: Trevor Berl (Sr., 6-1); Brenden Boissiere (Soph., 6-foot); Brandon Cody (Jr., 6-2).

Norco — SP Trevor Thompson (Sr., 6-foot-3); C Dylan Leary (Sr., 5-11); 1B Evan Johnston (Sr., 6-3); 2B Stewart Slessor (Fr., 6-foot); SS Brendan Brooks (Jr., 6-foot); 3B Clayton Owens (Soph., 6-1); OFs: Poncie Arguelles (Sr., 6-2); Corey Treyes (Sr., 5-11); Tyler Covington (Sr., 6-3).

Not much separates these two teams this season, but a win by Woodcrest Christian today could be a jumping-off point for the rest of the year.

Norco 3, Woodcrest Christian 2
