Prep Preview: Riverside King at Corona
I’m covering the Riverside King-Corona varsity baseball game today for The Press-Enterprise (@PEcom_preps) and Southern California Newspaper Group (@SoCalNewsGroup).
First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. at Corona (Calif.) High School.
THE LOW DOWN:
The Wolves (16-12 overall, 7-7 Big VIII) need to win today to even have an argument at an at-large playoff spot. They lost, 1-0, to Corona on Monday, so they only thing Coach Ken Scott’s team can do is in its final regular season game and hope for the best. Senior OF Jeremiah McCray leads the team with .414 (40 hit in 96 ABs) among five players hitting .300 or better. Senior LHP Cade Kirkemo (1-1, 2.11 ERA) leads the team with 48 Ks in 53 innings.
The Panthers (22-8 overall, 10-4 Big VIII) have had postseason rights in their grasp for weeks but a win here (coupled with a Santiago loss) would mean winning the Big 8 League title for Coach Andy Wise. More than anything, Corona must avoid losing on Senior Day. A loss on the final day of the regular season could spoil what has been a successful year, and leave a lingering negative thought ahead of what they expect will be a decent playoff run. Junior OF Michael Hobbs (.371 BA. three HRs) is among Inland Area leaders with 44 RBIs.
THE KEY PLAYERS:
Riverside King — OF Trevor Cadd., Soph. (6-foot-2, 180 pounds); RHP Santi Grossi, Jr., (5-11, 185); LHP Cade Kirkemo, Sr. (5-10, 180); OF Jeremiah McCray, Sr. (5-11, 160); OF Dylan Orick, Jr. (6-2, 190); C/1B Rory Smith, Jr. (5-11, 185)
Corona — SS Brendan Beck, Jr. (6-foot-2, 190 pounds); C Anthony Czerwinski, Jr. (5-10, 210); RHP/OF Michael Hobbs, Jr. (6-2, 215); 1B Jayden Kiernan, Soph. (5-9, 210); RHP Jeremiah Priddy, Jr. (6-foot, 210): INF/OF Samad Taylor, Sr. (5-9, 150)
The Wolves are playing for their lives. There should be a fire under Ken Scott’s players in this one.
THE FINAL SCORE:
Riverside King 4, Corona 2
