Prep Preview: Riverside North vs. Hillcrest

I’m covering the Riverside Riverside North-Riverside Hillcrest varsity football game tonight, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, for The Press-Enterprise and the Southern California Newspaper Group.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Riverside Norte Vista High School.

Riverside North (1-1 overall) started the season on a down note with a 35-6 loss to La Quinta at home. The Huskies trailed 20-6 at halftime and were never in the game, but bounced back a week with a 21-14 victory over Coachella Valley in Week 2 and now stand on the edge of turning around their season. The team has good size and some names you might remember, like Calhoun and Mephors. There are a number of Calhouns on this team, including the return of senior RB Tyzjon Calhoun-Fuller, and the emergence of junior WR Jerrel Calhoun. Senior DE/TE Bruce Mephors is an absolute load at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds.

Riverside Hillcrest (2-1 overall) come into this game with Riverside North riding the roller coaster. The Trojans started the season with a comfortable Week 0 win over Fontana Jurupa Hills but were outmuscled by Riverside Notre Dame in a 44-25 loss in Week 1. Week 2 proved to be a solid test against Chino, and Hillcrest found its way to a 36-38 win. Senior QB/RB Cordell Labrie lit up the scoreboard last year but has yet to have a really big game in ’17. Senior RB Elijah Dominguez currently leads the team in rushing and receiving yards.
HEAD COACH: John Brandom

Riverside North — QB Nick Satcher, Jr. (6-foot-5, 207 pounds); RB/LB Tyzjon Calhoun-Fuller, Sr. (5-9, 188); Claude Dent, Sr. (6-foot, 170); DE/TE Bruce Mephors, Sr. (6-5, 230); DE Edward Calhoun, SR. 6-4, 245; OL/DL Chris Ahumada, Jr. (6-1, 305); OL/DL Joe De Ferraz, Sr. (6-5, 298); K Diego Giron, Sr. (5-9, 175)

Riverside Hillcrest — QB Jalen L. Jeferson, Jr. (6-foot-1, 150 pounds); QB/RB Cordell Labrie, Sr. (5-11, 190); RB/DB Elijah Dominguez, Sr. (5-8, 165); LB/WR Joshua Ford, Jr. (5-11, 178); OL Nick Baker, Jr. (6-foot, 280); DE Javen Woods, 6-foot, 184); DL Braxton Spencer, Soph. (6-1, 235); K/WR/DB Nick Lawson, Sr. (5-11, 150)

If North’s defense can narrow in on Hillcrest’s two-prong rushing attack then it could be a long night for the Trojans.

Riverside North 26, Riverside Hillcrest 21
